Whereas software is a collection of code which is installed onto your computer’s hard drive, computer hardware is kind of physical device used in or with your machine. For instance, computer hardware are computer monitor that you are using to read the text and the mouse you are using to navigate one web page.
The Internet browser allowing you to visit every page and the operating system run by the browser is considered as software. All software uses one hardware device at least to operate. For example, a video game- is a kind of software needs to use the memory (RAM), hard drive, computer processor, and video card to start and run. Or we can see another example is that Word software has to use the computer processor, memory, and hard drive to create, edit and save documents.
In any computers, hardware has the function of making a computer work. While information is processed by a CPU and that information will be stored on a hard drive or in RAM. The sound can be provided to speakers by a sound card and an image can be provided by a video card to a monitor. All above examples are hardware. On that same computer, people can install software and interact the software with the hardware.
An operating system is software such as Windows or Mac OS. It can provide people with a graphical interface to use the computer and other software on the computer. A person who wants to create documents and pictures has to use software. Some people wonder whether a computer can run without software. The answer for this question is yes. In most situations, a computer can completely run without installing a software. But, if an operating system or interpreter is not found on the computer, it may generate an error or even, it doesn’t output any information. Installing programs onto the computer besides installing an operating system gives additional capabilities to the computer. For example, a word processor is not compulsorily required, but if it is installed onto the computer, it allows you to create documents and letters.
Another question is that can a computer run without hardware? It does not have an absolutely true answer. Because this depends on the hardware. A computer requires at least hard drive, keyboard, memory, power supply, a display, motherboard, processor, and video card to operate their functions properly. If any of these above devices are missing, an error will be encountered, or the computer will not start.
