The scientists from Cambridge have just developed a new type of battery called lithium – air which is believed to be stronger and cheaper to produce than the current li-ion battery. It’s very promising that in the future, our mobile devices will last longer, more enduring with this new battery. Especially when this kind of battery is applied for the electric vehicles industry, this will be the out future and a new hope for the environment.
In the development and application of electric vehicles, the most noticeable problem is the endurance of the battery and the rate of worn-out after being fully charged. However, li-ion battery cannot satisfy the mention above criteria because of its limitation incapacity, weight and producing price. These limitations hold back the development of electric vehicles industry. That’s why human still have to base on the traditional fuels like oil or gasoline for transportation.
Lithium – air is believed to be stronger and cheaper to produce than the current li-ion battery
However with the invention of a new battery by researchers from England, a new era is initiating. The lithium-air battery, Li-air in short, is a metal-air battery that uses “oxidation of lithium at one pole and reduction of oxygen at the other pole to create a current flow”. In the laboratory, the newly made battery called lithium-oxygen or lithium-air is believed to be 10 times energy density higher but 5 times less costly than li–ion battery. And the energy density of this battery is equivalent to gasoline
Apart from having higher energy density, lithium-air battery has the efficient of more than 90 percent better than the latest generation of li-ion battery with the efficient from 80 to 90 percent. This means that the wasted energy by turning into heat reduced dramatically. Moreover, this li-air battery can be recharged up to 2000 times with little worn-out effect as normal battery. If the electrical vehicles are equipped with this battery, the estimated distance that a car can travel can be more than 643 km.
Once li-air batteries are widely used, you know that developers do not only use it in electric vehicle industry but for mobile phones. If this comes to reality, our mobile phone will be thinner because of the battery, but the capacity will be 10 times longer than the same size battery using the li-ion technology. Professor Clare Grey of Cambridge Chemistry Department mentioned that: “What we’ve achieved is a significant advance for this technology and suggests whole new areas for research — we haven’t solved all the problems inherent to this chemistry, but our results do show routes forward towards a practical device.”
Now the research is only carried on in the laboratory, Li-air battery is supposed to be ready to use in 10 years. As technology moves on every single day, we can totally believe in this new battery can close the era of gasoline and open a whole new source of energy. This non-polluted energy can partially cut down the exhaust from cars and slow down the greenhouse effect.
